Choosing the best Bass Guitar Amp

Bass guitar amps helps improve and clear out the sound produced by bass guitars by manipulating the frequency of these sounds to modify its tone. The quality and performance features of bass guitar amplifiers are crucial to delivering clear and crisp bass guitar sounds, which is particularly helpful during live performances. For this reason, musicians tend to pay careful attention to the selection of the amps that they will use. In this light, majority of the bass players would prefer investing on a high-quality bass guitar amp rather than smaller bass guitar amplifiers as it is suitable for all applications. Aside from quality, there are other considerations in picking the best bass guitar amp in the market.

Considerations in Selecting your Bass Guitar Amps

Type of Bass Guitar Amplifiers

Combination amplifiers, separate head and standalone amplifiers are the two types of amps used on bass guitars. The combo amp is simply a two-piece speaker box that operates various sound configurations while other types of amps feature signal processing adjustments through sound effects and equalizer adjustments. Amplifiers may use one or more speakers which are responsible in boosting sound signals (preamplifiers) and increasing the current produced by the sounds (power amplifiers) with electronic sound effects features such as distortion, chorus or reverb. The ones used on bass guitars are particularly designed to handle low frequency range of sounds since bass guitars play notes on lower octaves.

Speakers

These are the components that produce the range of bass sound frequencies, carrying out the electronic effects and volume settings of the sound system. Bass guitars require a special type of speaker. A standard speaker will not work with bass guitars since the range of bass sounds are at lower sound frequencies. Bass amp speakers should have the right configuration of port tubes and speaker size to effectively modify and control bass guitar sounds. Aside from the type of speaker, speaker size also matters. Smaller speakers are known to produce tighter sounds and larger speakers tend to produce heavy to mushy sounds.

Purpose – A 100-watt amp paired with big heavy speakers is suitable for practice. For power range performance settings, the 200-400 watt amp is more ideally used.

Channels – Channel settings allow the musician to work with two or more EQ and effects chains and easily switch between them. This optimizes the quality of sound produced.

Portability – Since bass cabinets are often made from wood or heavy materials, consider the size and weight of bass guitar amp that you will buy. To prevent compromising the size and weight of the amp with performance, some brands incorporate wheels and sturdy handles to make their amplifiers easy to transport.

Construction -  Much like in buying your guitar, the material of the amp influences the quality of sound that it can produce. Since bass cabinets vibrate more and tend to become heavy, boxes are ideally crafted from wood with metal corner caps and speaker screens for sound optimum sound reinforcements.

Brands – There are so many brands to choose from: Ampeg, Ashdown, Carvin, Bag End, Crate, Eden, Febder, Gallien-Krueger, Hartke, Marshall, Mesa-Boogie, Peavey, Sunn, SWR, Trace Elliot, and Yorkville are among the most popular bass guitar amplifier brands.

Many of today’s bass guitar amp manufacturers understand the necessity for the device to produce quality sounds which are loud enough to cover larger venues. This explains why many of the new amp models add extra cabinet and reinforcements and more of the electronic sound effect settings to perfectly work on the lowest octave bass sounds.
