Older martins can sell for as high as six figures. Unlike some guitar models and brands which have only a small selection of left-handed instruments. General Information on Martins
Martins are originally a German product. The restrictive atmosphere and the strife between the guilds in Germany had C.F. Martin moving to the United States.
The Martin Company is still being run by the Martin family. They were the first to use a number of techniques and methods that were designed to strengthen the quality and sound of acoustic guitars. They attempted to break into the electric guitar market at one point but these guitars were not as popular as the acoustic and so the Martin Company returned to producing strictly acoustic guitars.
Left Handed Instruments
The majority of the time instruments are by default created for right-handed use. This is because the majority of individuals who play instruments are right handed. Most companies produce only a few models or instruments that are designed for left-handed use. The Martin Company however has a wide variety of styles that are designed for left-handed use.
Advantages and Disadvantages
The advantages of a Martin are the quality that you receive. There are a number of styles, most are 14-15 fret rather than 12 fret and they are still made from high quality materials. Steel or metal strings have also replaced the older catgut, which used to be part of the makeup of traditional acoustic guitars. This increases the length the sound carries and in many cases helps to strength the quality of the sound.
The down side is the fact that they tend to be expensive. This is especially true if you are looking for instruments from the early part of the 1900's. Other disadvantages are more personally based.
Some people may or may not agree that having the extra frets is something that works for them. There are some who also believe that over the years the overall quality of the Martin line has dropped. The overall designed has not changed over the years and techniques employed at the beginning of the 20th century are still being used.
Left-handed instruments are becoming increasingly popular when supplying instruments for all musicians needs. There are an increasing number of companies including the Martin Company which has been producing left handed instruments as a standard with some of their models rather than leaving these to be special or custom ordered or even limiting the models that are possible. Martins are some of the best in the world when it comes to acoustic guitars and are known for their quality and innovations.
